Celebration in the Oaks – A New Orleans Christmas

Christmas New Orleans’ style means a lot of different and wonderful things – but one thing it has meant since the late 80’s is the Celebration in the Oaks.

Starting the Friday after Thanksgiving and continuing through New Years’ Day, Celebration in the Oaks is a glittering extravaganza of light and color in City Park.

Celebration in the Oaks with Mr. Bingle!

Mr. Bingle – a New Orleans Christmas mainstay since the 50’s!

A family friendly attraction that only opens after dark, Celebration in the Oaks is an unbridled display of lights and decorations whose renown has grown to the point that it is now one of the most popular holiday displays in the country, attracting visitors numbering in the hundreds of thousands during its annual, month-long existence.

Draped among the boughs and there, beneath the canopy of City Park’s centuries-old, live oaks, festive lights and colorful decorations of whimsy commingle to create a truly dazzling spectacle of Christmas cheer.

Visitors can expect to see iconic favorites such as Mr. Bingle (the old, D.H. Holmes snowman who has been a part of New Orleans holiday displays forever, it would seem), the “Who Dat” tree, and the animated “Cajun Night Before Christmas” display, along with Storyland, and other park attractions gussied up for the event, as well.

Celebration in the Oaks in Carousel Gardens!

Carousel Gardens is part of Celebration in the Oaks

The antique carousel in the Carousel Gardens will be in operation during the Celebration in the Oaks along with other amusement rides and you’re really missing a treat if you don’t take the truly magical, two-mile, miniature train ride around the perimeter of the park to see all the displays.

Visitors can expect nightly entertainment, a full-service café, and ample parking. Children under three are admitted free but lines can be long so purchasing your tickets online, beforehand, can be a great idea.
