2011 Oak Street Po-Boy Festival

November 14th, 2011 by bbnola

Shrimp Po-Boy and Crawfish Étouffée at Felix´s

A Shrimp Po-Boy, served with style at Felix's Restaurant.

If you’re considering spending Thanksgiving in New Orleans, consider arriving a little early. People who travel for food will want not want to miss the 2011 Oak Street Po-Boy Festival, on November 20.

Po-Boys aren’t elegant and they can be messy, but they are oh-so-satisfying. They are comfort food at its finest. There’s a reason the Po-Boy has such a following. There’s a reason it has its own festival.

Po-Boys came into being during a 1929 New Orleans Transit Strike. Bennie and Clovis Martin, owners of the Martin Brothers’ Coffee Stand and Restaurant in the French Market, had worked as streetcar conductors and were sympathetic to the cause of the transit workers. In the words of Bennie Martin, “We fed those men free of charge until the strike ended. Whenever we saw one of the striking men coming, one of us would say, ‘Here comes another poor boy.’” They lengthened the traditional French loaf, and their bigger sandwiches sometimes fed whole families. Read more about the history of Po-Boys.

Nowadays, Po-Boys are a New Orleans staple and they’re enjoyed throughout the Southeast. You can put just about anything inside a loaf of French bread, and people do.

More than forty vendors will be at the 2011 Oak Street Po-Boy Festival, and there is a good chance more than 40 types of Po-Boys will be served. There will also be plenty of live music. Bring an appetite and wear dancing shoes.

New Orleans Bed and Breakfasts welcome Po-Boy enthusiasts. Choose a New Orleans Bed and Breakfast near the Oak Street Po-Boy  Festival, in the Carrollton District, or stay in one a bit farther away and burn off calories when traveling to and from the festival.

The Saints of New Orleans

September 16th, 2011 by bbnola

Eyes down field

Come to New Orleans this season, and support the Saints.

The Saints came into being in 1967 and showed their stuff right away by having the most wins for an expansion team in their first season. Yet victory was scarce those first years, as the team went through its inevitable growing pains. Things started to turn around as the Saints neared their 20th anniversary. In 1986, RB Bueben Mayes was named Rookie of the Year and went to the Pro Bowl along with LB Rickey Jackson and K Morten Anderson. In 1987, the Saints had nine consecutive wins, their first ever winning season, and they went to the playoffs. In 1988, their second consecutive winning season, they had their biggest win in history.

There have been many high points since then, including their first game in the Superdrome after Katrina, a 23-3 victory on Monday Night Football. The penultimate moment is undoubtedly their Super Bowl victory over the Indianapolis Colts on February 7, 2010.

What will this season hold? Come find out.

Fans, support the New Orleans Saints whenever you can, especially on their home turf. New Orleans Bed and Breakfasts will welcome you. There is no better city to visit, and no better team to cheer. Have you seen the Saints pregame chants? They make you want to dance as much as win.

Yes, even football is infused with music in New Orleans.

Check out the New Orleans Saints Schedule. Then look through our member New Orleans Bed and Breakfasts. Come to New Orleans to support your team this season, as often as you can.

Southern Decadence 2011

August 10th, 2011 by bbnola

Southern Decadence , New Orleans 2007

The 2007 Southern Decadence parade

Southern Decadence, also known as Gay Mardi Gras, takes place annually over Labor Day Weekend. This year, the event runs from Wednesday, August 31 through Monday, September 5, 2011. Openings are still available at New Orleans Bed and Breakfasts.

New Orleans is known for its tolerance. From it’s inception, it has been a haven for folks of all backgrounds, cultures, and colors. Though tension has arisen over the years, in general the city has dealt with differences by celebrating them. Parades and festivals are inclusive, rather than exclusive, and it’s hard to frown when you’re dancing.

Satchmo SummerFest, 2011

July 21st, 2011 by bbnola

The 2011 Satchmo Summer Fest takes place in less than 2 weeks; jazz fans from all around the country and world are preparing to travel to New Orleans for this grand celebration of jazz in general and Louis ‘Satchmo’ Armstrong in particular. Many will stay in New Orleans Bed and Breakfasts.

Satchmo SummerFest will be held at the Louisiana State Museum’s Old U.S. Mint in the French Quarter, August 6 – 7, 2011.

Two stages mean a variety of music can be heard in two days. Red Beans & Ricely Yours Stage is to host such greats as the Jason Marsalis Quartet, Kermit Ruffins and the Barbecue Swingers, and Yoshio Toyama & the Dixie Saints. The Coronet Chop Suet Stage will showcase the likes of the Bone Tone Brass Band, Will Smith & the Jazz Cats, and Leon ‘Kid Chocolate’ Brown. Performances begin at noon and run until 8 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday.

In addition to music, Satchmo SummerFest presents free seminars and discussions on Friday August 5, Saturday August 6, and Sunday August 7. All are welcome to attend discussions lead by the Satchmo of Japan, Yoshio Toyoma, recording industry icon Geroge Avakian, and Armstrong scholar and musician Dan Morgenstern, among others.

It wouldn’t be Satchmo SummerFest without a Birthday Party for Louis Armstrong, a Sunday morning Jazz Mass at St. Augustine Church in Treme, and a traditional second line parade. Many New Orleans restaurants will highlight some of Satchmo’s favorite dishes. There will be a host of activities for folks of all ages.

Be spontaneous. Head to New Orleans for Satchmo SummerFest in early August. New Orleans Bed and Breakfasts will, as always, welcome jazz fans.

For additional festival information, please see Satchmo SummerFest.

Red Dresses and White Linen

July 18th, 2011 by bbnola

Folks just don’t dress up enough any more. Sure, movie stars look dazzling on the red carpet, philanthropists attend New York balls in style, and the fabulously wealthy wear high fashion because they can. But the rest of us – those who go to work and cook meals and hang out with our children – we rarely have occasion to dress to the nines.

That’s why it’s so much fun to visit New Orleans.

The citizens of New Orleans love any excuse to dress up and to dress zany. Call it what you will: inexhaustible joie de vivre, exhibitionism, or a gimmick. The fact remains that it’s fun.

Two upcoming occasions in New Orleans demonstrate this fashion fun perfectly: Whitney White Linen Night, and Red Dress Run. Spend a couple of weeks at a New Orleans Bed and Breakfast and attend both.

White Linen Night

Whitney White Linen Night takes place from 6 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, August 6, 2011. It’s a block party and an art stroll, it’s free, and it’s fabulously fun. Dress in your finest White Linen and head to Julia Street in the Warehouse Arts District. Duck in and out of art galleries as you walk down the street with hundreds of other folks stylishly clad in white linen. All are welcome to end the evening at grand gala held at the Contemporary Arts Center ($10 admission). You may prefer to find a more intimate spot to dine or enjoy a drink.

The Red Dress Run on August 13, 2011, is an entirely different sort of event -sweaty, but still glamorous. It’s a fund raiser and a fun run sponsored by the Hash House Harriers, known around town as “a drinking club with a running problem.” All runners must wear a red dress – bring your own or borrow one from the Hash House Harriers. Anyone 21 or older may participate, and all participants will be awarded “Beer, Food, Music, Giveaways, and stories to tell your kids.” Additional information is available at Red Dress.

Whether you visit New Orleans for a weekend or a few weeks, consider staying in a New Orleans Bed and Breakfast. Let it be your home base and live like a local in the fabulous city of New Orleans.

The Running of the Bulls, New Orleans

June 28th, 2011 by bbnola

Run with the bulls in New Orleans - it's more safe and fun than in Spain.

Something extraordinary happens in New Orleans every July – something even more unusual and wonderful than you might expect. It is the annual Running of the Bulls. And it is remarkable.

Instead of flying to Pamplona, Spain, book a room in your favorite New Orleans Bed and Breakfast for the weekend of July 9, 2011. New Orleans “bulls” aren’t as dangerous as the horned beasts who draw crowds in Spain. In New Orleans, the bulls are members of the New Orleans-based flat-track derby team known as the Big Easy Rollergirls.

If you dare to run, you may be “gored” by one of these bulls. Don’t worry – the wiffle ball bats they use to thwack slow runners haven’t sent anyone to the hospital yet. But they have caused a fair amount of fun and hilarity.

In typical New Orleans fashion, what began as a one day event has mushroomed into a three day event. Enjoy Spanish food and wine at The Chicory on Friday, July 8, and La Fiesta de Pantalones (The Pants Party) at 12 Bar on Fulton at 8 p.m. Saturday.

Anyone may participate in this free event. So pack a white shirt, white pants or shorts, and a red scarf, and head to New Orleans on July 8, 2011, for the Running of the Bulls.

Additional information is available at Nolabulls. Visit New Orleans Bed and Breakfasts for a list of inns.

Free Outdoor Concerts in New Orleans

June 22nd, 2011 by bbnola

New Orleans brings much to mind: parades, dancing in the street, po-boys, jazz, oysters, the blues, lovely old buildings, coffee and beignets, and more.

People travel to New Orleans once to experience it. They come back because they fall in love with the city and its culture. Some can’t resist the food. Others can’t resist the music. Few can resist the city’s many charms.

Guests of New Orleans Bed and Breakfasts are often seduced by the city’s generous inclusivity. Nothing exemplifies this trait better than the parades and outdoor concerts that draw spectators off the sidewalk and into the fray. It’s hard to stand still when good music walks by, but it’s easy to fall in step.

Saint Louis Cathedral from the Algiers Point Ferry (135)

•    June 29: Luther Kent, The Mumbles
