Red Dresses and White Linen

July 18th, 2011 by bbnola

Folks just don’t dress up enough any more. Sure, movie stars look dazzling on the red carpet, philanthropists attend New York balls in style, and the fabulously wealthy wear high fashion because they can. But the rest of us – those who go to work and cook meals and hang out with our children – we rarely have occasion to dress to the nines.

That’s why it’s so much fun to visit New Orleans.

The citizens of New Orleans love any excuse to dress up and to dress zany. Call it what you will: inexhaustible joie de vivre, exhibitionism, or a gimmick. The fact remains that it’s fun.

Two upcoming occasions in New Orleans demonstrate this fashion fun perfectly: Whitney White Linen Night, and Red Dress Run. Spend a couple of weeks at a New Orleans Bed and Breakfast and attend both.

White Linen Night

Whitney White Linen Night takes place from 6 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, August 6, 2011. It’s a block party and an art stroll, it’s free, and it’s fabulously fun. Dress in your finest White Linen and head to Julia Street in the Warehouse Arts District. Duck in and out of art galleries as you walk down the street with hundreds of other folks stylishly clad in white linen. All are welcome to end the evening at grand gala held at the Contemporary Arts Center ($10 admission). You may prefer to find a more intimate spot to dine or enjoy a drink.

The Red Dress Run on August 13, 2011, is an entirely different sort of event -sweaty, but still glamorous. It’s a fund raiser and a fun run sponsored by the Hash House Harriers, known around town as “a drinking club with a running problem.” All runners must wear a red dress – bring your own or borrow one from the Hash House Harriers. Anyone 21 or older may participate, and all participants will be awarded “Beer, Food, Music, Giveaways, and stories to tell your kids.” Additional information is available at Red Dress.

Whether you visit New Orleans for a weekend or a few weeks, consider staying in a New Orleans Bed and Breakfast. Let it be your home base and live like a local in the fabulous city of New Orleans.

The Running of the Bulls, New Orleans

Run with the bulls in New Orleans - it's more safe and fun than in Spain.

Something extraordinary happens in New Orleans every July – something even more unusual and wonderful than you might expect. It is the annual Running of the Bulls. And it is remarkable.

Instead of flying to Pamplona, Spain, book a room in your favorite New Orleans Bed and Breakfast for the weekend of July 9, 2011. New Orleans “bulls” aren’t as dangerous as the horned beasts who draw crowds in Spain. In New Orleans, the bulls are members of the New Orleans-based flat-track derby team known as the Big Easy Rollergirls.

If you dare to run, you may be “gored” by one of these bulls. Don’t worry – the wiffle ball bats they use to thwack slow runners haven’t sent anyone to the hospital yet. But they have caused a fair amount of fun and hilarity.

In typical New Orleans fashion, what began as a one day event has mushroomed into a three day event. Enjoy Spanish food and wine at The Chicory on Friday, July 8, and La Fiesta de Pantalones (The Pants Party) at 12 Bar on Fulton at 8 p.m. Saturday.

Anyone may participate in this free event. So pack a white shirt, white pants or shorts, and a red scarf, and head to New Orleans on July 8, 2011, for the Running of the Bulls.

Additional information is available at Nolabulls. Visit New Orleans Bed and Breakfasts for a list of inns.
