The French Quarter, or Vieux Carré (Old Square) is what comes to mind when many people think of New Orleans. It is the most historic and best-preserved part of the city, full of beautiful architecture, numerous shops and restaurants, bars and clubs, museums and homes. Situated above the Mississippi River on some of the highest ground in the city, the French Quarter escaped destruction from two major fires in the18th century and Katrina. It has survived to inspire artists, spark love, and add a little magic to the world.
The French Quarter thrives because people live there as well as visit. The buildings boast a great mix of architectural styles, from Spanish to French, Creole to American. Walled courtyards, cast iron balconies, and colorful row houses are signatures of the French Quarter. Many New Orleans bed and breakfasts are located in the French Quarter, an easy walk to all it has to offer.
Home tours are offered throughout the year, providing access to some of the most magnificent buildings in the neighborhood, or you can simply enjoy walking along the streets. Look for the Gallier House, the Merieult House, and the Cornstalk Fence Hotel. Notice The Victorian, where Harriet Beecher Stowe penned Uncle Tom's Cabin, and the Faulkner House, where William Faulkner wrote Soldiers Pay. Everywhere you turn, you'll see architecture that is a feast for the eyes.
There are wonderful antique shops, rich in treasures, and museums that will educate and astonish you. Some of the best people watching can be found in the French Quarter of New Orleans, along with some of the greatest food in the south. And don't forget the music. New Orleans has given birth to some of the greatest musicians ever, while others come here to take part in the thriving music scene. There is music seven days a week; you can always find jazz piano, brass bands, and cajun, just to name a few.
Enjoy your stay at New Orleans bed and breakfasts, and have a great time exploring the Vieux Carré.
