The French Quarter, or Vieux Carré (Old Square) is what comes to mind when many people think of New Orleans. Situated above the Mississippi River on some of the highest ground in the city, the French Quarter escaped destruction from two major fires in the18th century and Katrina. Walled courtyards, cast iron balconies, and colorful row houses are signatures of the French Quarter.
