New Orleans Jazz/Music

It is difficult to think of New Orleans without thinking of music. Music is everywhere here and infuses everything; it's in the streets, in clubs, at weddings and at funerals. It just doesn't seem right to stay in a New Orleans bed and breakfast without experiencing some form of live music or jazz, and innkeepers are a great resource for tips on local legends and the best venues.
New Orleans is considered the birthplace of Jazz. It grew out of the music slaves played on Sundays in Congo Square in the 1830s, and morphed into the blues, brass marching band music, dixieland and ragtime. Louis Armstrong was born here, as was Jelly Roll Morton and Buddy Bolden, first of the New Orleans jazz figures.
Guests of New Orleans bed and breakfasts will easily find live jazz music seven nights a week. Head to the Maple Leaf Bar, with pressed-tin walls, a jam-packed dance floor, and music that doesn't allow you to sit still. Tipitinas, featured in the film The Big Easy, today features a mix of top local and touring acts. If you have the stamina to stay up late, pop into Fritzel's European Jazz Pub, where jam sessions have been known to break out among musicians who've gathered from all over the city.
Yet you don't have to stay up late to find great music in New Orleans. Grab some café au lait and beignets at Cafe du Monde and head to Jackson Square, where some mighty talented buskers can be found. While there, take time to have your portrait drawn by one of the artists lining the streets. As always, the innkeepers of your bed and breakfast New Orleans are your best source of information. They'll have a finger on the pulse the music scene.

Chez Nous Guest HousePhone: 504-432-7072New Orleans has always been a significant center for music, showcasing its intertwined European, Latin American, and African cultures. New Orleans' unique musical heritage was born in its pre-American and early American days from a unique blending of European instruments with African rhythms. As the only North American city to allow slaves to gather in public and play their native music (largely in Congo Square, now located within Louis Armstrong Park), New Orleans gave birth to an indigenous music: jazz. Soon, brass bands formed, gaining popular attraction that still holds today. The city's music was later significantly influenced by Acadiana, home of Cajun and Zydeco music, and Delta blues. ![]() |
